Hi Tiled Community,
I am Shuvro Bhattacharjee, a 3rd-year Computer Science student. I am currently exploring organizations for GSoC 2026 and was really impressed by Tiled.
I have a strong background in C++ and Python, and I am very comfortable with GitHub workflows. While I am confident in my engineering and optimization skills, I am relatively new to game development specifically.
I have two questions regarding the contributor selection process:
What are the primary criteria you look for when selecting GSoC contributors?
Will a lack of deep experience in game development affect my chances, or is the focus primarily on core software engineering and C++/Qt proficiency?
and it will be very helpful if anyone add me in community .
Best regards,
Shuvro
Since you’re not the first to ask, I’ve recently extended the Application Process section with some qualities we’re looking for:
Note that we’re not just looking at your skills! What we’re looking for are people who:
are motivated by personal interest rather then money,
see value in releasing their work as free software and welcoming others to contribute,
will think things through rather than just following instructions,
and who are critical of their own work and perfecting it before waiting for feedback.
But also note that we’re a small organization and it looks like we’ll be accommodate only 2-3 projects, since we don’t have more mentors this time.
I’d say previous experience with game development is not important for most projects, except for things like glTF export where one needs to have a bit of a feeling for what this export needs to look like to be useful for game developers.
If you are serious about applying for a project on Tiled, please do post your instruction in the Google Summer of Code 2026 topic, also because I can use that topic to address all of you when appropriate.
I see you on Discord and wrote you a message, can you try to reply? I could not see any reason why you would not be able to send messages.
Thanks @bjorn for replying . I saw your reply yesterday, and I’ve since set up my PC and started going through the codebase with the goal of contributing.
I’m actively exploring the project and looking for areas where I can help, and I’d be very grateful for any guidance along the way. I’m excited to learn and to contribute meaningfully.
Unfortunately I’m unable to guide each of you directly in getting to know Tiled, this is where you need to play around with the tool yourself and consider looking at the open issues at the GitHub repository to see what things the users have been asking for or which problems they have run into.
There are many people using Tiled as-is, but the tool is far from perfect. When you find something you’d like to improve, feel free to ask more specific questions!
